Œuf à la coque
In many French hotels in the breakfast room you will find a machine like the one pictured above. This one is in the hotel Residhome in Arcahon. The machines are for boiling eggs. As you can see there are directions for how long to boil the egg for soft, medium, or hard.
To eat a soft boiled egg the egg needs to be placed in a coquetier, an egg cup. One morning while eating my œuf à la coupe I decided that coquetiers would be a nice thing to take back to My Imaginary French Village. I went to the nice people at the Residhome front desk to find out where I could find some coquetiers. The response was funny; they told me “œuf à la coupe is what babies eat.” We did get good recommendations on where to find them.
Louis XV the grandson of King Louis XIV the King of France in the 18th century liked œuf à la coque so much that he carried his coquetier around with him everywhere.
Children do love œuf à la coque especially œuf à la Coque-mouillettes soft boiled eggs with bread fingers. I think most adults would agree they are delicious!
