Lillet, Podensac,France

Lillet is a French wine based aperitif from Podensac. The blend is 85% Bordeaux region wine, and 15% macerated liqueurs mostly citrus based.

I was first atracred to Lillet by the pretty bottle and label. After tasting it I really liked it.its really refreshing especially on a hot day that we have many of in My Imaginary French Village.

We were lucky to get to visit Lillet in Podensac. We had a great little tour from a very knowledgeable, and friendly young girl.

We learned so much on the tour. When Lillet was first made in 1872 until 1985 it contained quinine. In the 1800’s tonic wines with quinine were very popular as quinine was used to ease the symptoms of malaria and high fever.

Now Lillet is still a very popular aperitif in France and around the world.  It can be drunk straight or mixed in an aperitif.

If you are a fan of James Bond you may remember the drink the Vesper in the first James Bond novel Casino Royal. The Vesper is made of Gordon’s, Vodka, and Kina Lillet. Kina Lillet was the name of Lillet when it contained quinine.

If you find yourself in Podensac stop by Lillet.
