One afternoon while eating lunch at Pont du Gard in southern France I heard a buzzing sound. I kept hearing it and then noticed what I thought was a Hummingbird. I grabbed my camera that I always have and started taking pictures. The whole time we weren’t sure what it was. Was it a hummingbird or an insect. When we got back to our hotel I immediately began asking everyone what it was. Nobody knew so I started researching it.
I found out is was a Hummingbird hawk-moth, an insect. Ever since I have become obsessed with them. They are so cool and fun to watch.
The Hummingbird hawk-moth has a proboscis that reaches deep into flowers to drink the nectar.
An adult is 40mm to 55mm. Their wings beat 70-80 beats per second allowing them to hover.
They will fly day and night and even in the rain.
The Hummingbird hawk-moths migrate from Africa to Europe in May and June and are seen in Fall too. I have only seen them in France. The top picture was at Pont du Gard, the bottom in Arcachon. I have never seen a Hummingbird hawk-moth in My Imaginary French Village, but I keep my eyes open!
